The best low FODMAP apps, judged on their data

The short answer. A FODMAP app is a food composition reference, and references are judged on where their numbers come from. Buy the Monash app. $7.99 once, from the laboratory that created the diet. We make a competing app and it is still the recommendation, because Minthe does a different job and only becomes useful at step three of the diet, not step one.

Where each app's data comes from

This is the only comparison that really matters here, and it is the one most roundups skip.

Checked August 2026. "Not verified" means we could not confirm the provenance from public sources, not that the data is wrong. Several of these apps are well rated by their users.

Our app is the wrong tool for most of this diet

The low FODMAP diet has three steps, and Minthe is only useful in one of them.

  1. Elimination: use Monash, not us

You need to know what is in food. That is a lookup problem and the reference app solves it. Minthe adds nothing here that a good lookup does not already do better.

  2. Reintroduction: this is where measurement starts to matter

You reintroduce one group at a time and watch what happens. The failure mode is judging the result by recollection, because symptoms fluctuate anyway and a single bad day after a challenge proves very little. This is the step Minthe is built for.

  3. Personalization: the step most people never reach

The intended endpoint is the least restrictive diet that controls your symptoms, which means knowing which groups you can have back and in what quantity. Almost nobody gets here, and staying in permanent elimination has real costs to nutrition, microbiome diversity and quality of life.

The mistake this category encourages

A lookup app makes elimination easy and reintroduction invisible. It will happily support you in avoiding six FODMAP groups forever, because every lookup returns an answer and none of them ever says "you could probably have this one back". That is not a criticism of the apps; it is what a reference is. But it means the tool that helps you most in month one is the tool least likely to get you out of restriction in month six.

If you take one thing from this page, take the fact that the diet is not meant to be permanent, and that the people who do worst are usually the ones who did step one thoroughly and never did step three at all.

Already using one of these?

Switching is a different question from choosing. These cover what actually transfers, what does not, and the cases where staying put is the right answer.

The other roundups

Each of these sorts the category on a different axis, because ranking the same apps four times in the same order would be one page with four URLs.

How apps get on this page. They have to be live on the US App Store, be findable by someone searching for this problem, and do the job the page is about. We include apps that beat Minthe, and we say where they beat it. No app pays to be here and there are no affiliate links on this page.

What changed in this update. First publication. Written because existing FODMAP roundups rank apps by feature count without ever asking where the underlying numbers come from, which is the only thing a reference app is for.

Frequently asked

What is the best low FODMAP app?

For the reference data, the Monash FODMAP app, and it is not a close call. Monash developed the diet and physically tests foods for FODMAP content in their own laboratory, so their figures are the primary source that other apps and websites are ultimately quoting. It costs $7.99 once. We make a competing app and this is still our recommendation for the lookup job.

Is there a good free low FODMAP app?

Yes. Fast FODMAP and Low FODMAP diet A to Z are both free, both well rated, and both perfectly usable as everyday lookup tools. The trade-off is provenance: neither generates its own laboratory data. For most everyday decisions that difference does not matter; for a food you are about to formally challenge during reintroduction, it does.

Do I need a FODMAP app at all?

During an elimination phase, something to look foods up in is close to essential, because the FODMAP content of foods is genuinely unintuitive and changes with portion size. After the elimination phase, a lookup app becomes much less useful and what you need instead is a way to work out which groups are actually yours, so you can stop avoiding the ones that are not.

Why do FODMAP apps disagree with each other?

Mostly portion size and testing method. FODMAP content is dose-dependent, so the same food can be low FODMAP in a small serve and high in a larger one, and apps differ in which serving size they treat as standard. Certification schemes also differ. If two apps disagree, prefer the one that tells you the serving size its answer applies to.

Does low FODMAP work?

For many people, yes. Monash cite symptom relief in around 75% of people with IBS. That also means roughly one in four get no benefit from a demanding restriction, and among those who do respond, most react to some FODMAP groups and not others. The diet is designed as three steps ending in reintroduction, and stopping at step one is the most common way it goes wrong.
